2010年にディスカバリーチャンネルの番組『怪しい伝説（MythBusters）』で、警察犬の追跡を燻製ニシンを放ることでかわせるか、実験が行われた。この実験で犬は魚を食べるために立ち止まり、逃亡者の臭いをしばらくの間見失ったが、最後には元の追跡に戻ってターゲットを見つけ出した。この結果、この神話は「ウソ」と判定された。
