[네이버 지식백과] 옥수수 [corn/indian corn/maize] (두산백과 두피디아, 두산백과)....원산지는 멕시코에서 남아메리카 북부라고 하나 그 원종이 아직까지 명확하지 않으므로 그 기원에 대해서도 여러 가지 설이 있는데, 적어도 수천 년 전에 재배된 이래 주작물(主作物)로서 남북 아메리카 대륙에 걸쳐 널리 재배되었다. 1492년 콜럼버스가 옥수수 재배하는 것을 보고 종자를 에스파냐로 가지고 돌아간 후부터 30년 동안에 전유럽에 전파되었으며 그후 인도나 중국에도 16세기 초에는 널리 퍼졌다. 한국에는 16세기에 중국에서 전래된 것으로 알려져 있다.
