1642년과 43년 겨울에 의회의 승리는 거의 없었다. 더욱 주목할 만한 것 중 하나는 1643년 1월 23일 토마스 페어팩스 경 휘하의 의회군에 의해 리즈를 점령한 것이다. 런던 뉴스 브로드시트(The London news broadsheets)는 그의 공적에 대해 발표했고 일부는 그를 두고 "흰 말의 기수"(the Rider of the White Horse)라고 불렀는데, 성경의 요한계시록(19장 11절)에 등장하는 우화를 인용한 그 비유는 청교도에게는 가장 직접적으로 와 닿는 것이었다.
