AirAsia Malaysia’s (AK) China expansion continues, with the resumption of direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Shantou starting 16 June and a new direct flight from Kota Kinabalu to Beijing (Daxing) on 1 July this year.

Sabah is set to achieve targeted three million target arrivals, with two new additional flights by AirAsia serving directly from Shantou, China and Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Kota Kinabalu on Nov 16 and 17, respectively.
AirAsia Malaysia plans to expand its China network this summer by reconnecting Kuala Lumpur and the southern coastal city of Shantou from June 16 with two weekly flights, increasing to four the next month. July 1 will then see the budget carrier begin nonstop services from Kota Kinabalu to Beijing’s enormous new Daxing International Airport, to be operated daily.
The new connections will allow AirAsia to strengthen its position as the largest foreign low-cost carrier in China with a 45-percent market share, following the recent resumption of regular flights to destinations such as Guangzhou, Kunming, Nanning, Shenzhen, and Wuhan, in addition to Hong Kong and Macau.

With Shantou now offering direct flights, it becomes the ninth city in China linked to Kota Kinabalu, joining other major cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing. The Shantou route will operate three times a week, increasing the total to 55 weekly direct flights from China to Kota Kinabalu.
The new Kaohsiung route marks the second direct connection from Taiwan to Sabah, complementing the existing service from Taipei. This expansion aims to attract more tourists from southern Taiwan and neighbouring cities like Tainan and Pingtung.
