Vaak wordt het woord vertaald met "verschrikkelijke hagedissen". Richard Owen in zijn Report on British Fossil Reptiles, voetnoot onderaan pagina 103 van het Report of the Eleventh Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (juli 1841) legde zelf de etymologie uit als Gr. δεινὁς, fearfully great, σαὐρος, a lizard., dus de vreeswekkend grote omvang beklemtonend. Hoewel Sauria van sauros is afgeleid, is het niet het grammaticaal meervoud "hagedissen", maar een collectivum waarvan de Nederlandse vertaling "sauriërs" is
