  • Volgens Shirihai, H. (2008). Gids van alle zeezoogdieren. Tirion, Baarn, p. 74. ISBN 978 90 5210 712 7., worden mannetjes tussen 7 en 9,8 meter lang en wegen ze tussen 3,8 en 5,5 ton. (en) Martin, Anthony R. (1990). The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Whales and Dolphins. Portland House, New York, p. 118. ISBN 0 517 02564 7., geeft niet alleen de gemiddelden maar ook de spreiding: "... an average adult body length of about 6.7-8m (maximum 9.75m) for males and 5.7-6.6m (maximum 8.53m) for females. Body weight averages 4-6.3 tonnes (maximum 10.5 tonnes) for males and 2.6-3.8 tonnes (maximum 7.4 tonnes) for females". Een ondergrens voor de spreiding van lengte en massa van adulte dieren is lastig vanwege het te maken onderscheid met juvenielen.
