De oudstbekende deelname van Christopher Hudson aan een slakkenrace dateert van 1969, toen in Brighton een slakkenrace gehouden werd om geld te werven voor Shelter, een Engelse liefdadigheidsorganisatie voor daklozen. Hudson zou later als slakkentrainer bekend worden (hij verscheen onder meer op 12 april 1970 in Hobbyhorse, een BBC One London programma) en hij zou met name in het nieuws komen met het opsporen van 's werelds grootste landslak, Gee Geronimo.
