Referansesadelen til Mont Blanc ligger på vannskillet mellom Volga og Nordre Dvina, nærmere bestemt ved landsbyen Nikolskij Torzjok på vannskillet mellom elven Sjeksna i Volgavassdraget og elven Itkla med innsjøen Blagovesjtsjenskoje ovenfor Kubenskojesjøen i Nordre Dvinavassdraget, se kart. Sadelpunktets høyde ligger mellom 120 og 130 moh. og anslås til 124 moh. Dette er det høyeste minimumspunktet langs vannskiller fra Mont Blanc til høyere fjell på det eurasiske kontinent, uten hensynstagen til menneskebygde kanaler.
