[w:] A film of a screening programme in the rural communities of the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales. This research followed the work the unit carried out on the incidence of tuberculosis and lung disease in 1951 and 1953 with the mining communities of the Rhondda Fach. There are shots of the TB detection van around the valleys and the screening programme in progress. [on-line]. Cardiff : College of Medicine. [dostęp 2020-05-08]. (ang.).

  • : W licznych źródłach Archie Cochrane jest nazywany „ojcem EBM”[34][13], jednak według części publikacji na to miano zasłużył np. Arystoteles[76] lub Thomas McKeown(inne języki) (1912–1988)[77]. Koncepcje McKeowna (budzące kontrowersje) wspierał m.in. Angus Deaton, pisząc np.[78]:

McKeown's views, updated to modern circumstances, are still important today in debates between those who think that health is primarily determined by medical discoveries and medical treatment and those who look to the background social conditions of life.

Inni autorzy twierdzą, że popularyzowane współcześnie zasady EBM są nie w pełni zgodne z koncepcjami przedstawionymi w 1972 roku w Effectiveness and Efficiency[79]:

Through a close reading of this text, we show that the principal aim of modern EBM, namely to warrant clinical decisions based on evidence drawn from RCTs, is not part of Cochrane's original project. He had more modest ambitions for what RCTs can accomplish, and, more importantly, he was more concerned with care and equality than are his followers in the EBM movement. We try to reconstruct some of Cochrane's lost legacy and to articulate some of the important silences in Effectiveness and Efficiency From these clues it might be possible, we argue, to remodel EBM in a broader, more pluralistic, more democratic and less authoritarian manner.

Epidemiolog David Sackett twierdził, że pionierem EBM był William Silverman(inne języki) (1917–2004) – neonatolog, któremu autorzy Testing Treatments: better research for better healthcare[60] zadedykowali tę książkę.

  • Głównym zadaniem MRC, założonego w 1913 roku, było początkowo zapobieganie i zwalczanie gruźlicy. Pierwszym dyrektorem generalnym był w 1914–1933 Sir Walter Morley Fletcher(inne języki). Obszarami aktywnej działalności były tereny eksploatacji złóż węgla, ponieważ jednym z czynników ryzyka jest pylica (ang. pneumoconiosis).
W latach 1945–1952 dyrektorem MRC Pneumoconiosis Research Unit był syn Waltera Flethera, Charles Montague Fletcher (1911–1995) – pulmonolog, jeden z autorów publikacji pt. The Role of Periodic Examination in the Prevention of Coalworkers' Pneumoconiosis (A.L. Cochrane, C.M. Fletcher i inni, Br.J.Ind.Med. 1951)[39], w latach 1952–1976 lekarz w Hammersmith Hospital(inne języki), wykładowca w London University (Royal Postgraduate Medical School), w latach 1954–1995 – MRC, m.in. Committee on Smoking and Health i funkcja przewodniczącego[80].
