Deste tempos antigos, como em I Samuel 9:9 ("(Antigamente em Israel, indo alguém consultar a Deus, dizia assim: Vinde, e vamos ao vidente; porque ao profeta de hoje, antigamente se chamava vidente)."), e como prática corrente, como em I Samuel 10:6–24 ("E o Espírito do SENHOR se apoderará de ti, e profetizarás com eles, e tornar-te-ás um outro homem. (...)". Conforme o contexto, constituía-se numa prática arriscada, como ilustrado em II Crônicas 16:7–10.
Outra evidência da existência desta prática entre o povo judeu, uma vez que não se proíbe aquilo que não existe: «Entre ti não se achará quem faça passar pelo fogo a seu filho ou a sua filha, nem adivinhador, nem prognosticador, nem agoireiro, nem feiticeiro; / Nem encantador, nem quem consulte a um espírito adivinhador, nem mágico, nem quem consulte os mortos; / Pois todo aquele que faz tal coisa é abominação ao SENHOR; e por estas abominações o SENHOR teu Deus os lança fora de diante de ti.» (Deuteronômio 18:10–12)
O episódio da chamada Bruxa de Endor descreve o modo pelo qual era praticada a invocação do espírito dos mortos na região, à época, no que seria hoje considerada uma simples sessão mediúnica. Ver I Samuel 28:1–25.
