Uma coluna do The Straight Dope, datada de 1986, listou 32 formas diferentes de escrita utilizadas na Biblioteca do Congresso dos Estados Unidos,[1] enquanto a ABC identificou 112 variações.[2] Uma entrevista de 2007 com Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, filho de Gaddafi, confirmou que Saif escrevia seu próprio nome como Qadhafi[3] e o passaporte de outro filho de Gaddafi, Mohammed, utiliza a escrita Gathafi.[4] De acordo com o Google Ngram Viewer, a vaariante Qaddafi era a mais utilizada, seguida por Qadhafi, Gaddafi e Gadhafi.[5][6] Romanizações científicas do nome são Qaḏḏāfī (DIN, Wehr, ISO) ou (raramente utilizado) Qadhdhāfī (ALA-LC).
