Philadelphia, USA: Lea & Blanchard. p. 232. 475 páginas «the prices paid for the mullus surmuletus are characteristic of the luxury and gastronomy of the times. It was obtained from Sicily or Corsica ; was highly prized , and therefore immensely expensive. Octavius is said to have purchased one for five thousand sestertii , upwards of one hundred and eighty dollars. Seneca , Juvenal and Tertullian mention others sold at six thousand sestertii-about two hundred and fifteen dollars. Asinius Celer, according to Macrobius, bought one for seven thousand H. S.—about two hundred and fifty dollars ; others were sold for eight thousand H. S ., - upwards of two hundred and eighty dollars : and Suetonius remarks that the emperor Tiberius complained bitterly , that three mullets had been sold for more than thirty thousand sestertii ,-one thousand and seventy dollars. The following anecdote is told of this emperor. A mullet, of an extraordinary size - weighing fifty pounds - having been given to him , he sent it to the market, observing, that, if he was not deceived , either Apicius, or Octavius would purchase it , nor was he mistaken. The two gourmands bade against each other, and it was ultimately knocked down to Octavius, for five thousand sestertii—about one hundred and eighty dollars»
