  • O livro Reincarnation in Christianity, pelo teosofista Geddes MacGregor (1978) afirmou que Orígenes acreditava na reencarnação. MacGregor está convencido de que Orígenes acreditou e ensinou sobre reencarnação, mas que seus textos escritos sobre o assunto foram destruídos. Ele admite que não há provas existentes para essa posição. A alegação também foi repetida por Shirley MacLaine em seu livro Out On a Limb. Orígenes discute o conceito de transmigração (metensomatose) da filosofia grega, mas afirma-se repetidamente que esse conceito não faz parte do ensino ou das escrituras cristãs em seu Comentário sobre o Evangelho de Mateus (que sobrevive apenas em uma tradução em latim do século VI): "In this place [when Jesus said Elijah was come and referred to John the Baptist] it does not appear to me that by Elijah the soul is spoken of, lest I fall into the doctrine of transmigration, which is foreign to the Church of God, and not handed down by the apostles, nor anywhere set forth in the scriptures" (13:1:46–53, ver Commentary on Matthew, Book XIII
