"Sons of Tucson" is flat and flabby and while I'm unoffended by it, I certainly don't much care whether or not people watch.
Past Life and Human Target will get the huge benefit of running after the massive American Idol, while Sons of Tucson will air on Sundays in-between The Simpsons and Family Guy.
The comedy Sons of Tucson, starring Reaper's Tyler Labine, is said to be almost certain to get a pick up, as is the DC comic book based Human Target, with Mark Valley (Fringe) and Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen).
FOX has already picked up the DC Comics adaptation Human Target and the comedy Sons of Tucson for the fall.
FOX quickly pulled this live-action comedy, starring Reaper's Tyler Labine. It aired during the network's animation block on Sunday nights, making for an odd pairing – but a necessary one, given the lack of other FOX live-action comedies. With the failure of Sons, this is an arena the network needs to work extra hard at, if they're ever going to find a niche.
Labine's casting was in "second position" to Reaper, meaning if Reaper was picked up, he would stay with that series – however, it's been considered almost a certainty that Reaper would not renewed by CW, and FOX picking up Sons certainly signals they are confident they will have Labine available.
He's awesome! He's so much fun to work with. He's such a sweetheart and hilarious. Just completely hilarious to work with.
Labine brings the same likable slacker charm to this role as on Reaper, and Sons looked amusing, if not hysterical. The show certainly has some sex appeal, via Natalie Martinez (Death Race), who plays one of the boy's teachers and the understandable object of Ron's affection. Reilly played up the show as a successor to Malcolm in the Middle, noting the shows share a director, Todd Holland. Sons didn't seem to have the spark the early Malcolm episodes did, at least in these clips, but certainly seems to have some promise.
The show does point toward a sentimental conclusion -- were it a movie, that end would be reached in a couple of hours, with the pretty teacher played by Natalie Martinez. But the governing impulses here are more sardonic than sentimental, and this being television, the usual end may be forestalled indefinitely, and happily so.
