Gerardo Mello Mourão, instead of Guimarães Rosa, may well have been his original guide and master. This author and translator, in these years integralista, was also accused of being a Nazi spy and – together with Meyer-Clason – a prisoner on Ilha Grande. There Mello Mourão wrote parts of O valete de espadas, only published in 1960, becoming the first Brazilian novel Meyer-Clason translated into German (Pikbube, 1963). This fell into oblivion. In the meantime, Grande Sertão – Veredas (1964) established his fame as a translator of Brazilian Literature. Our study is aimed at reframing not only Meyer-Clason’s dominant foundational narrative as a literary translator but also his translating method and practice without going into a complete translation analysis of Pikbube.
