(справка)On one level, much of the intelligence was spot-on. There was, as forecast, a full invasion from multiple directions with the purpose of toppling and replacing the Zelensky government. Western spies also correctly predicted that Moscow had misplaced confidence about the reception it would encounter. "They genuinely believed there would be flags out to welcome them," says a Western intelligence officer.
With fighting raging in eastern Ukraine 10 weeks into the battle against Russia's invasion, the top human rights official at the United Nations told the Security Council on Thursday that her staff had documented scores of cases of Russian forces targeting male civilians around Kyiv. Some were beaten, detained or executed, and some had been taken to detention camps inside Russia and Belarus, said the official, Michelle Bachelet. "My staff met with families who are searching for their missing male relatives, desperate to know where they are, if they are alive, and how they can get them back," Ms. Bachelet said, speaking at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council. Ms. Bachelet said her office had recorded 180 cases of forced disappearance of local officials, journalists, activists, civilians and retired servicemen and eight cases of pro-Russian individuals who had disappeared.

They were "detained, beaten, summarily executed and in some cases taken to Belarus and Russia," unbeknown to their families. Bachelet also mentioned reports of sexual violence — including the raping of women by Russian soldiers — as well as other allegations of sexual violence by both parties in the conflict.
