The Karabakh, Zangezur, and Shuragel' district (eastern Shirak) became part of Russia in 1805. The remaining areas of Eastern Armenia, the Yerevan and Nakhichevan khanates, became part of the Russian Empire by the Treaty of Turkmanchai in 1828. In March 1828 an Armenian Province was created, of which Yerevan and Nakhichevan khanates were part.
