A good example of this was the creation of the Armenian alphabet by St. Mesrop in the fifth century. St. Mesrop clearly felt that the Armenian people needed an alphabet that would not only be adequate to represent the sounds of their language but would also be distinctly different from the Greek and Syriac alphabets in use by the surrounding peoples."
