The AONK was carved out of the mountainous portions of the districts in Azerbaijan that constituted historic Karabagh. North to south they were Javanshir, Shusha, Kariaginsk (formerly Jebrail), and small portion of Kubatlinsk (formerly part of the Zangezur uezd). These four districts bordered the Armenian republic; the AONK initially touched the Armenian border at one point, as shown in the first volume of the Bolshaia Sovetskaia Entsiklopediia published in 1926. By the time the volume on Nagorno-Karabagh was published in the early 1930s, the borders had been changed and no part of the oblast touched Armenia.
Moreover, the map was drawn such that the borders of the new region came close to but did not touch Armenia. In between lay the Lachin region of Azerbaijan (initially known Red Kurdistan)
The first phase of displacement occurred between 1988 and early 1991 predominantly across the Azerbaijan-Armenia border. Ethnic tensions led over 300,000 ethnic Armenians to flee from Azerbaijan to Armenia and some 185,000 ethnic Azerbaijanis to flee from Armenia to Azerbaijan (UN CHR, 25 January 1999). The displaced first started to flee Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh in September-October 1988 following scattered sporadic interethnic clashes (RFE/RL, 10 February 2006).

The very first draft or list of settlements that was to be included in the autonomy, did not include the land connection. There are some early Soviet maps show the AONK border touching border of Armenia. The maps are not large-scale, so it is impossible to say that there is a definite land connection between the two. So, I have not seen any hard evidence of the land connection existing.

Тем более, что согласно этому решению, не только армяне, но и азербайджанцы оказались разделёнными между собственно Азербайджаном и Нахичеванью. Декрет от 7 июля 1923 года, подписанный в Баку, закрепил данное положение. Через месяц столица Нагорно-Карабахской автономной области была перенесена из Шуши в Ханкенди, переименованный в Степанакерт — в честь «великого армянского большевика», руководителя Бакинской коммуны Степана Шаумяна. НКАО была официально провозглашена в ноябре 1924 года. Любопытно, что на карте 1926 года, помещённой в первом томе «Большой советской энциклопедии», НКАО граничит в одном месте с Арменией; в дальнейшем же посредством ряда территориальных преобразований области Карабах был сознательно отделён от Армянской республики. С 1930 года соответственно корректировались и карты, на которых Лачинский коридор стал обозначаться как территория Азербайджана и НКАО — отделенная от собственно Армении.
