РП объединяет отдельные факторы при изучении памяти (Alloway et al. 2004, Gathercole et al. 2004). Функционирование РП связано с работой различных нейронных подсистем. В работу РП больше вовлекается дорсолатеральная префронтальная кора, а сохранение информации в уме без манипулирования ею (пока количество элементов невелико) не требует вовлечения дорсолатеральной префронтальной коры (D’Esposito et al. 1999, Eldreth). et al. 2006, Smith & Jonides 1999). Нейровизуальные исследования показывают, что фронтальная активация происходит только в вентролатеральной префронтальной коре при поддержании памяти. РП и кратковременная память также показывают различные прогрессии развития; последняя развивается раньше и быстрее».
