An early, big effort to push ideas that are now called the circular economy was led by the [now Royal] Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in the late 1800s. As written about by economic geographer Pierre Desrochers, people in the RSA argued that the desire to make a profit (the "profit motive"), long-distance trade, and certain people (like waste dealers and brokers) who are not common today all encouraged finding new ways to make money from leftover manufacturing materials ("residuals").<ref>Desrochers, Pierre (2025).
