Običajno velja, da Pamir pokriva ozemlje od pogorja Trans-Alay na severu, pogorja Sarykol na vzhodu, jezera Zorkul, reke Pamir in zgornjega toka reke Panj na jugu ter meridionalnega dela doline Panj na zahodu; na severozahodu Pamir vključuje vzhodne dele pogorja Petra Velikega in Darvaza".
