There is at least one example of a very large (three refrigerator-size cabinets) and complex pre-transistor switching regulator using thyratron gas-filled tubes, although they appear to be used as regulators rather than for DC-to-DC conversion as such. This was the 1958 power supply for the IBM 704 computer, using 90 kW of power.[1]
