"al- Jazarī, Badīʿ al-Zamān". Badīʿ al-Zamān Abū l-ʿIzz Ismāʿīl b. al-Razzāz al-Jazarī (b. c.530/1136, d. 602/1206) was an outstanding Arab scholar, engineer, polymath and inventor. The only information about his life is found in the introduction to his richly illustrated manuscript containing a collection of fifty mechanical devices and inventions, with their detailed construction plans. "al- Jazarī, Badīʿ al-Zamān". The book was also translated into Persian and Turkish. Today, copies of the book are held in European and American museums and libraries. The earliest was finished, as stated in the manuscript, at the end of Shaʿbān 602/mid-April 1206, when al-Jazarī was already dead. This earliest extant manuscript is held in Istanbul in the Topkapi Palace Museum Library (MS 3472). It is titled al-Jāmiʿ bayn al-ʿilm wa-l-ʿamal al-nāfiʿ fī ṣināʿat al-ḥiyal (Olağanüstü mekanik araçların bilgisi hakkında kitap) (“A compendium on the theory and useful practice of the mechanical arts”) and was used by Ahmad Y. al-Hassan for the Arabic edition of the text. The English translation by Donald R. Hill is based mainly on a manuscript titled Kitāb fī maʿrifat al-ḥiyal al-handasiyya (“The book of knowledge of ingenious mechanical devices”), written in 891/1486 and held in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
