Because Cui's biography in the Old Book of Tang quoted an edict of Emperor Xuanzong's honoring him as the Duke of Boling, it is not completely clear whether Cui, posthumously, was formally referred to as a duke or a prince. Cui Xuanwei's biographies in the Old Book of Tang and the New Book of Tang both indicated that this change occurred "during the time of Empress Wu," which could mean either during her reign as "emperor" or the first reigns of her sons Emperor Zhongzong and Emperor Ruizong.
