Mutual hostilities increased until February 24, 1979, when troops on both sides of the border fired on each other. Noth Yemenite forces were led by radical army offices across the border and attacked a number of villages in South Yemen; with Soviet, Cuban, and East German, South Yemenite troops invaded the north. Alarmed by this invasion of its ally, Saudi Arabia called an emergency meeting of the League of Arab States and, along with the United States, rushed arms to North Yemen. A U.S. naval task force was sent to the Arabian sea.
