依據歐洲法院對“科曼與其他人訴內政部與移民總檢查局案（英语：Coman and Others v General Inspectorate for Immigration and Ministry of the Interior）”的裁決，歐洲聯盟成員國必須為歐盟公民的外國配偶（無論性別）提供居住權；除羅馬尼亞外，其餘成員國均遵守該判決。
部分縣、市（英语：Partnership oath in Japan）會頒發同性伴侶關係證書，但這些證書不具備法律約束力。
法院已承认guru-shishya（英语：guru-shishya）、nata pratha（英语：nata pratha）、maitri karar（英语：maitri karar）类型的契约关系，但它们不具有法律约束力。
