事实上两者都不是，因为U-14号并未击沉鹫号，而一小时前，指挥U-30号潜艇的海军中尉弗里茨-尤利乌斯·伦普（英语：Fritz-Julius Lemp）便已击沉了英国客轮雅典娜号（英语：SS Athenia (1922)）。但伦普并未将此事告知U艇总司令（英语：Befehlshaber der U-Boote）卡尔·邓尼茨少将，直到英国海军部宣布这一事实并指责德国人的暴行时，邓尼茨才从英国广播中得知了这一事件。^[7]
