焦耳的这个英尺-磅的单位和现代对能量的度量是相符合的。将一定的质量“m”抬升一定的高度“h”所需要的能量是“mgh”，其中“g”是指标准重力。焦耳的单位如果被解释为英尺-磅力（英语：Foot-pound (energy)），那么在量纲上是正确的。如果使用国际单位制，1英尺-磅的能量如果用单位焦耳来表示则是：1英尺-磅=1.356焦耳。
