He redefined formatting rules, including the use of lists, links, and H1-H6 headings that were now set off by a corresponding number of ‘#’ characters. At some point, Gruber and Swartz communicated and the latter became Markdown’s ‘sole beta-tester.’ Swartz provided feedback on the syntax and even wrote html2text, a free conversion tool for turning HTML into Markdown.“
