greka γράμμα (kvazaŭ γράφ-μα, dorika γράθμα) signifas "io verkita, letero", sed ĝi uziĝis kiel mezurunuo de maso, ŝajne egala al 1/24 de unco (1/288 de funto, kio egalus al ĉirkaŭ 1.14 gramoj en nuntempaj unuoj), fum iome da tempo dum la malfrua Antikveco. La franclingva gramme estis adoptita el la latina gramma, siavice kun tre malhela signifo, sed troviĝanta en Carmen de ponderibus et mensuris (8.25) atribuita al Remmius Palaemon (fl. 1a jarcento), kie ĝi estas la pezo de du oboloj (Charlton T. Lewis, Charles Short, A Latin Dictionarys.v. "gramma", 1879).
