  • و آنچنان که او از افراد محلی شنیده است، این تغییر نام دلایل اقتصادی و مذهبی داشته است. پدر او که احمد نام داشته، نام خانوادگی خود و فرزندانش را به احمدی‌نژاد تغییر داده است [۱]. چند سال بعد، مطالبی مبنی بر این که احمدی‌نژاد ریشه یهودی دارد در منابع مختلفی منتشر شد. در سال ۱۳۸۸، این مطلب در رسانه‌هایی نظیر دیلی تلگراف انعکاس یافت و عنوان شد که صبورچیان، به معنای بافنده سبور (شال یهودیان) است و این نام در وزارت کشور در فهرست نام‌های خانوادگی یهودیان ثبت شده است [۲]. مئیر جاودانفر در مقاله‌ای در گاردین؛ این که سبور به معنای شال یهودیان است را رد کرد و با استناد به صحبت‌های رابرت تیت و کسری ناجی با مردم آرادان که تأیید کرده‌اند خانواده احمدی‌نژاد رنگرز بوده‌اند، می‌نویسد که یهودیان ایران به رنگرزی اشتغال ندارند. مادر احمدی‌نژاد سید است و پدر او هم بسیار مذهبی و معلم قرآن بوده است، بنابراین یهودی بودن خانواده او صحت ندارد.[۳]. بعدها، عنوان شد نام خانوادگی قبلی احمدی‌نژاد، «صباغیان» بوده است و نه سبورجیان (هر دو به معنای رنگرز). داوود احمدی‌نژاد در سال ۱۳۹۰ به هفته‌نامه آسمان گفت: «... بعد از انقلاب اعلام کردند که هر کسی فامیلی‌اش مشکل دارد یا خوشش نمی‌آید بیاید عوض کند. پدرم از آن فامیلی [صباغیان] خوشش نمی‌آمد لذا به واسطه اسم خودشان [احمد] فامیلشان را گذاشتند احمدی‌نژاد.» [۴][پیوند مرده]
