Korthals (1839–1842:161) が Stephegyne parvifolia (Roxb.) Korth. [≡ M. parvifolia] として紹介したものの一部（現在のインドネシアはジャワ島カラワンあるいはその周辺地域の低地林で採取したもの）が1902年に Mitragyna javanica Koord. & Valeton という新種として記載^[9]、これは後に M. diversifolia のシノニムとされるがタイプ標本（基準標本）が明確に指定されておらず、さらに後になってからそのレクトタイプ（選定基準標本）としてコルトハルスがカラワンで採取した標本（オランダ国立植物標本館所蔵: L 0000739）が指定されることとなった^[10]。なおコルトハルスが左記の扱いを行った1841年当時はまだ Mitragyna diversifolia という分類は存在せず、ナウクレア属に分類されていた^[10]。

この属を最初に設けたピーテル・ウィレム・コルトハルスが示していたのは Mitragyna africana [≡ Mitragyna inermis]、Mitragyna parvifolia、アヘンボク（Mitragyna speciosa）の3種である^[5]。
英: thyrse。ライラックの花のように密に分枝し、主軸が不明瞭な一方で側軸は明瞭な花序のことをいう^[7]。

採取地はギニアと記されているが、採取者の Paul Erdmann Isert が赴いたのは当時のデンマーク領ギニアすなわち現在のガーナであった。Uncaria inermis のアイソタイプ（副基準標本）は少なくともデンマークのコペンハーゲン大学とロシアのコマロフ植物研究所（英語版）の2ヶ所に収蔵され、このうち前者の標本^[15]はタイプ産地が「ガーナ（のアダ (Ada)）」と明記されている。
Nauclea africana Willd. [≡ Mitragyna inermis (Willd.) Kuntze] と先述の Nauclea parvifolia。
ハヴィランドを命名者とする場合はコルトハルスによる Stephegyne speciosa を基となる学名（バシオニム（英語版））、1897年のハヴィランドによるコルトハルスの文献からの引用を Stephegyne speciosa からミトラガイナ属への組み替えと見做し、学名の表示は Mitragyna speciosa (Korth.) Havil. となる。
バイヤ（Mitragyna ciliata Aubrév. & Pellegr.）、Mitragyna rubrostipulata (K.Schum.) Havil.、Mitragyna stipulosa (DC.) Kuntze。
なお3種のうちバイヤに関してはコートジボワール産の Mitragyna ciliata の新種記載が1936年であるのに対し、それよりも早い1920年に新種記載されたカメルーン産の Adina ledermannii K.Krause が同一の種であることが判明したために、リズデイルは新たに Mitragyna ledermannii という組み替えを発表した。
ミトラガイナ属からは当時 Hallea rubrostipulata と分類されていた Mitragyna rubrostipulata が選ばれ、カギカズラ属からもカギカズラ Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq. が選ばれた。
内部転写スペーサー領域（英: internal transcribed spacer region）のこと。核となるリボソームDNA中にはスペーサーが2つ（ITS-1およびITS-2）含まれる領域が存在するが、いずれのスペーサーもPCR（ポリメラーゼ連鎖反応）により増幅させることや、普遍的なプライマーの使用により塩基配列の決定（シークエンシング）を行うことが、押し葉標本のDNAが対象の場合であっても容易に可能であり、被子植物の科の系統分類を行う上で有益な情報源となるとされる^[38]。
ミトラガイナ属を除いたこの時の内訳は次の通り。Angiosperm Phylogeny Website で確認される現在の扱い^[40]も併せて記す。

- なお Ridsdale & Bakhuizen van den Brink Jr (1975) はほかにヤマタマガサ属（Cephalanthus）もタニワタリノキ連から除いてアカネ科内で独立の連 Cephalantheae を為すとしており、また後に当時の既知の種からDiyaminauclea属、Khasiaclunea属、Ludekia属、Ochreinauclea属などを新属として設けて移した際、リズデイルはこれらも彼のいう「狭義のタニワタリノキ連」("Naucleeae s.s.") の下に配置している^[41]ということ、またこの時はヨヒンベノキ属（Corynanthe; シノニム: Pausinystalia）もタニワタリノキ連には含まれていなかった^[42]ということに留意されたい。なおヤマタマガサ属やヨヒンベノキ属に関しては Razafimandimbison & Bremer (2002) で改めてタニワタリノキ連の下に置かれるようになった。
