"Bellarmine (Ital. Bellarmino), Roberto Francesco Romolo", Encyclopædia Britannica, Eleventh Edition: "Bellarmine did not proscribe the Copernican system ... all he claimed was that it should be presented as a hypothesis until it should receive scientific demonstration." This articleincorporates text from a publication now in the public domain:Chisholm, Hugh, ed. (1911). "Hypothesis". Encyclopædia Britannica. Vol.14 (11thed.). Cambridge University Press. p.208.
Supposition is itself a Latinate analogue of hypothesis as both are compound words constructed from words meaning respectively "under, below" and "place, placing, putting" in either language, Latin or Greek.
