a schiltron was a large formation of tightly packed men many ranks deep into a rectangle or square. The outside was protected by a wall of shields. Each man carried an 18 foot long pike and the outside ranks would lower the pikes in any direction an attack came from. The schiltron could move in any direction on the field of battle and was immune from cavalry attacks.
