It was thought the reason Hessian soldiers executed Rev. Rosbrugh is that they mistook him for Rev. John Witherspoon. Witherspoon was also a Presbyterian minister, a member of congress, and a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence.[21] While all Presbyterian ministers were blamed for the war, John Witherspoon was a main target of the British. He was the president of The College of New Jersey (later Princeton) which was a center of rebellion against the British.[22]
