Wenige Wörter des Deutschen werden in solchem Maße als Synonym für die bezeichnete Sache verstanden, wie es beim Begriff ›Duden‹ der Fall ist. Er steht für Rechtschreib-Wörterbücher schlechthin, ist vergleichbar mit Bezeichnungen wie ›Tempo‹ für Papiertaschentücher, ›Uhu‹ für Alleskleber, ›Maggi‹ für flüssige Speisewürze. … Wer auch immer wissen will, wie man ein Wort schreibt, er wird im Duden nachschlagen. Selbst wenn er eines der zahlreichen konkurrierenden Rechtschreibbücher benutzt, die heute vor allem durch Buchklubs, Kaufhäuser, Supermärkte und Kaffeegeschäfte vertrieben werden, wird er auf Anfrage, woher er sein Wissen beziehe, vermutlich prompt antworten: ›Ich hab’ im Duden nachgeguckt‹.“
